Databases
Dictionaries Reference Desk - Science
http://www.eurekalert.org/resources/definitions.html
Index of links to glossaries or dictionaries from various scientific disciplines, provided and maintained by government, academic, research-oriented, and professional organizations. Includes agriculture, biology, computers, engineering, environmental and earth sciences, mathematics, health, physics, and space sciences.
Microsoft TerraServer
http://terraserver.microsoft.com/
Huge database of aerial photographs and declassified satellite images from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Russian Space Agency. Current coverage is mainly the U.S. and parts of Europe with other scattered areas of the world. The plan is to eventually cover most of the globe with updated images and finer resolution. Searchable by clicking on a world map, entering a placename, or selecting a site on the Famous Places page. Requires a Java-enabled browser.
Mission and Spacecraft Library
http://msl.jpl.nasa.gov/
This site from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory contains "basic information about all 5000+ spacecraft launches and launch attempts since the beginning of the Space Age." Search the Launch Facts database by spacecraft name, launch site, launch year, orbit class, organization, mission type, or launch vehicle. Browse by spacecraft name, program name, or mission type. The section Orbit Ephemeris supplies technical data on Two Line Element (TLE) sets which help to characterize a spacecraft's orbit.
NASA Image eXchange (NIX)
http://nix.nasa.gov/nix.cgi
"...a web-based search engine for simultaneously searching one or more of NASA's online image and photo collections. Searching is performed using keywords (boolean operators can be employed to refine the search). NIX returns thumbnail sized images; textual descriptions; image numbers; and links to higher resolution images, more information, and the NASA Center that stores each image." Currently searches databases of over 300,000 NASA images. The Browse link will lead to NASA's choice of their best photos. The Options link will allow you to refine your search.
