Republic Day Message From President George W. Bush to President Ahmet Necdet Sezer

Dear Mr. President:

On behalf of the American people, I extend my warmest congratulations to you and all citizens of Turkey on the eighty-second anniversary of the founding of the modern Republic of Turkey on October 29.

The United States and Turkey share a strong commitment to freedom and democracy.  Our two countries have cooperated on the global war on terror and stand together to advance freedom and peace throughout the region.

The United States also congratulates Turkey on the start of accession talks with the European Union.  This milestone is a tremendous success for the people of Turkey, Europe, and the United States.  Turkey’s reform efforts over the last decade on human rights, the rule of law, and free market economics reflect Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s vision of a progressive and free democracy, anchored in Europe, and at peace with its neighbors.

Please accept the best wishes of the people and Government of the United States for both you and the people of Turkey in the coming year.  May it be a year filled with peace and prosperity.

Sincerely

George W. Bush
