Mistranslation of Ambassador’s Comments

Ankara, June 3, 2005. A poor translation of part of Ambassador Edelman’s remarks to the US-Turkish Business Council yesterday in Istanbul resulted in incorrect reports about the speech in some Turkish media. What the Ambassador said is as follows: “…This is especially the case when there are other voices raised against the (Turkish-US) relationship. Misguided ideas – such as the public calls earlier this year for boycotts of US companies – should be countered and contradicted when they raise their ugly heads, because they can do real and lasting harm.” The full text of the Ambassador’s remarks is available on the embassy website at http://ankara.usembassy.gov.
