English Language Programs

The English Language Office (ELO)

The English Language Office (ELO) of the Public Affairs section works with Turkish universities and with the Turkish Ministry of Education to help improve the teaching of English and to disseminate information on American culture and institutions. The office assists in the implementation of English Language Teaching (ELT) teacher development programs nationwide, and coordinates a sales and distribution program to make high-quality English language teaching materials and reference sources more accessible. The office works closely with the English teaching association INGED, with program directors, school administrators, and teachers from both the government and private sector to make the teaching of English more effective.

Programs and Activities 

   

Teacher development Workshops and Presentations on a variety of topics including: curriculum development, content-based learning, ELT methodology, American studies.

 
English Language Specialists are recognized experts in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT). They conduct programs with Turkish educational institutions as well as the Ministry of Education.
 

Placement of English Language Fellows (ELFs) for one academic year at Turkish universities or tertiary-level institutions: 

 

The Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program is designed to allow young Turkish teachers of English to teach Turkish and study at an American university for an academic year. 

 

Distribution and sales of United States government-produced materials for teacher development and the teaching of English and American culture.

 

Partial travel grants for Turkish teachers to enable them to participate in teacher development programs in Turkey and at the annual convention of TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages).

 

English Access Microscholarship Program is a recent Department of State initiative for underprivileged youth in predominantly Muslim communities
